Passport is an identification document issued by the government of a country to its citizens for foreign travel purposes. It records the citizen’s citizenship, name, date of birth, gender and place.
The passport represents the right to consular protection while a person is abroad and the right to return to the country where he was issued the passport.
How to apply passport online
The first step to a passport is to register online. To do so, go to the website www.passport.gov.in and select ‘New User? Click on the ‘Register Now’ link. Then answer the questions correctly.

After registering, click on the ‘Apply for Fresh Passport Re-Issue of Passport’ link and proceed with the process. The third step is to fill up the application form and upload the required documents. Documents proving address and age should be scanned and uploaded. These are the basics. (If you find it inconvenient to upload then just prepare the required documents and upload later). After that you have to go to the passport office and complete the follow-up.
After submitting the application, the passport charge has to be paid online. The normal fee for obtaining a passport is Rs. 1500 / -. If you want to get a passport quickly through Tatkal, the fee is Rs 3,500. You will have the option to schedule your appointment online after payment. You can choose the time and date of arrival at the Passport Service Center for further processing. When you do, you will receive an SMS confirming the appointment at the phone number you provided. Additionally, an e-mail will be sent to your e-mail ID reminding you of the time and date of arrival at the Passport Service Center.

The applicant should appear in person at the Passport Service Center on the specified date. Proof of date of birth (SSLC book), photo ID (Election ID card), proof of address (Election ID card or Aadhaar) and proof of citizenship (Election ID card) should be produced. Keep the original and photocopy of the above documents.
